O-rings are one of the most common seals used in machine design because they are easy to make, reliable, and have simple mounting requirements. O-rings are measured by the inside diameter and cross section.
Backup rings are used when there is a possibility of gap extrusion. Backup rings are placed behind traditional O-rings to prevent the O-ring from extruding between the extrusion gap in the housing. Backup rings are made in solid or scarf cut.
Spring energized seals work well in applications with high speeds, under a wide range of temperatures, and with various media. A spring is used to energize the jacket of the seal to provide a constant load to the seal lip. The spring can be cantilever, canticoil, or helical wound. The spring type and spring load are both determined based on the application.
A gasket is a mechanical seal which fills the space between two or more mating surfaces, generally designed to prevent leakage from or into the joined objects under compression. Gaskets fill irregularities on "less-than-perfect" mating surfaces on machine parts.
When a standard seal won’t fit your specific application, Wyatt Seal can help. Let our experienced team design or fit a custom shape and/or sized seal for your application.
